Watching the Olympics Online: What to Look For

The 2012 Summer Olympics start up in London which should be one of the best venues for these games in quite some time. London provides not only a good balance of time zone access to allow viewers from practically all over the world to see the games in a live form but also a good variety of actual venues and arenas to give the audience a great feel for the dynamic city of London. For those visiting England to watch their country’s athletes compete live, they will be impressed in that London has not only the well known classic structure and properness of the monarchy but also the more modern amenities travelers will desire in the nightlife, food and entertainment to keep them busy and engaged during their stay in the great city. Everyone knows about the Queen of England, Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abby and Buckingham Palace. Most people want to see the roundabouts, the Tube, Wembley Stadium and even the Tower of London. Its a great city on many levels and should once again be a fantastic host to the 2012 Summer Games. Now lets see what will be happening with the games themselves and what to expect when the medal counts begin to grow.

When July 27 comes rolling around and the official start of the London Games arrives, those watching the Olympics streaming online at home usually have their favorite events they want to watch even before the games begin. The only true event that begins on July 27 is archery which by all accounts is one of the least watched events thus it makes sense that this event would be greatly overshadowed by the Opening Ceremonies on that same night. The Opening Ceremonies is without question the most viewed single ‘event’ during most Olympic Games and this year should be no different. Football events and qualifying do begin before the Opening Ceremonies but no medals will be given out for that event until the final 3 days of the entire Olympics.

The weightlifting, swimming and shooting events kick into high gear with medals events occurring within the first bunch of days. The swimming events in particular are some of the most watched and exciting days of the Summer Games. The inclusion of record holder Michael Phelps will of course be a huge boon to the streaming viewership Events including gymnastics occur during the middle portion of the schedule and make up a large degree of the primetime lineup at that stage of the competition. With many highly populated countries such as Russia, China and the United States having the majority of the gymnastics high end talent, these events will be a strong point of the games. Finally, towards the end of the games the real athletes come to play in the world of track and field. Sure, people love to watch the amazing pole vault, the strength of the shot put and discus throwers and high jumpers but all eyes are always focused on the speed events including the 100 meter dash, 4 x 100 relay race and 400 meter dash. These events are not only fun to watch but awesome in their competitive nature and bring out the patriotic nature of the sports themselves. No one should miss these events online if they call themselves fans of the Olympic games.

So if you are planning to watch the Olympics online or in your living room, the London venues will provide a spectacular backdrop to the events. Enjoy them.
